going west

we love the change in personal style that arrives as the air grows crisp and the leaves begin to fall — ha, just kidding — this is los angeles! we often find ourselves a bit disappointed when we can’t embrace many fall trends due to the fact that it’s just too goddamned hot here. that said, there’s one trend for fall 2014 that is really striking our fancy, and is conveniently conducive to los angeles weather.

from cushnie et otchs to tibi to stylestalker, designers on every end of the spectrum are looking westward this season — more on that later this week. we’re personally translating this trend for los angeles weather with silk button-downs, fringe, hats, and western-inspired booties. here we paired our equipment silk blouse (does it get any better than an equipment silk blouse? no. it doesn’t.) with our new favorite hat we can’t stop wearing, and for a feminine touch, a lacy short. we think this look would be great paired with black denim, as well, for when it gets a little chillier (by which we mean 75 degrees).

while we don’t promote going for a full-on cowboy vibe (more power to you, though, if that’s your thang), we love the subtle hint of i-shot-a-man-in-reno-just-to-watch-him-die badassery this fall trend lends to your look.

women's suits

as previously discussed, we’ve sort of got a major crush on women’s suits at the moment. while we patiently await the arrival of the spring lines in stores so we may purchase the full suit of our dreams, we’re playing around with different ways to suit up now.

sometimes — okay, fine, most of the time — there’s nothing we like better than borrowing from the boys. we’re obsessed with the trouser-like fit of these pants we picked up from piperlime by skies are blue. the grid pattern makes them really fun to mix and match (more on that soon), and moreover, makes them an extremely comfortable option for the office.

because we can’t not acknowledge our hood roots, we also can’t stop wearing this is-it-ironically-ghetto-or-is-it-just-plain-ghetto los angeles necklace we picked up, and liked the contrast of it here with an otherwise formal look.

last month, the past was all over the spring 2015 runways — the 70′s reigned supreme, whether it was in the form of bohemia, psychedelic prints, or our most beloved: women’s suiting. ah, yes. to us, little else can compare to the allure and glamour of a woman who has the balls to dress like a man. there’s an undeniable sexiness in the guts it takes to embrace androgyny that fashion has been missing, and we can’t wait to get it back.

see below for some inspiration old and new, from studio 54 to september’s runways.

fall sportswear

fall sportswear

fall sportswear

one of our favorite trends this season is fall sportswear. it’s fresh, it’s comfortable, and it speaks to our former b-girl stylin’ ways from our days growing up in the east bay area. as you can see from the upcoming alexander wang collection for h&m, the athletic-inspired trend we’ve been seeing this year is definitely here to stay throughout this transitional season. get ready to embrace it wholeheartedly, if you have not already (shame on you).

we picked up these faux leather sports inspired pants from zara in army green, and their comfortability and versatility have quickly made them our closet go-to. they are really easy to dress up for the office or a night on the town, but can also be paired with slip-ons or flats if you want to look extra cool while running your weekend errands. additionally, this crop top was a friggin’ epic h&m steal for $8 — we love the idea of mixing it with a high-waisted trouser or pencil skirt as another way to stretch the sportswear trend into evening wear.

whether you chose to go for a full sportswear look or mix it up a bit as we did here with a floral print and heels, you really can’t go wrong with this comfortably chic trend.

as an aside, both pieces of jewelry you see here came from a delightful LA store called le pink & co. beauty apothecary, which we recently visited for the first time. located on sunset in silver lake, it is our new happy place of beauty products & cool-yet-affordable costume jewelry gems like this. if you’re in LA, too, we highly recommend you check it out.

when the altuzarra for target collection dropped, we were at our local store bright-eyed and bushy-tailed (by which we mean bleary-eyed, dazed, and disgruntled) the second it opened, ready to fight off the masses. one of the pieces we’d overlooked in the altuzarra for target collection lookbook, the striped collared sleeveless dress, turned out to be one of our favorites — the sharp, crisp look of the white collar and dropwaist pinstriped skirt spoke right to our hearts.

while we’re suckers for a simple, clean look and love the idea of this dress paired with white pumps and a slick pony, we also love to screw things up just a little.

as such, we changed it up a bit by styling this dress with our favorite shitkicker booties for a juxtaposition to the cleanliness of its look. next we added our tried and true prada sunnies, and, naturally, our favorite new street art addition in our LA ‘hood (please note our genuine glee in the second photo above). mean boots, a schoolgirl dress, and cynical-yet-charming asshole LA attitude: it was all so wrong that it felt so, so right.
