lately we’ve had a bit of an obsession with the classic pencil skirt. here’s the thing about these little gems: they never, ever go out of style. if you’re looking to pick up an “investment piece” (we know, go ahead and punch us for using this phrase), this is a silhouette worthy of a splurge. not only are they a timeless favorite, they’re flattering, elongating, and very easy to dress up or down.

we picked up this floral pencil skirt at zara for a mere — wait for it — $25. and let us tell you in no uncertain terms: we’ve worn the shit out of this thing. whether worn with blouses for work or with a screen tee for a casual look, it has paid for itself in dividends. here, we’ve paired it with a screen tee and some delightfully over-the-top earrings from j. crew, and topped it with our favorite moto jacket from nasty gal for a look that’s half rock and roll, half glam.

this is a really easy to look to re-create on the cheap or with an — here we go — “investment piece” for a look that will never go out of style.

when we were planning our first-ever trip to europe last summer, the graphic designer sister of our duo mentioned her lofty goal of fitting everything she needed for the two-week long trek into a carry on. the fashion girl sister laughed, “okay, have fun with that, I’ll see you at LAX with my 5 checked bags.” however, as 14 days of international planes and trains approached, the idea of lugging gigantic suitcases and paying baggage fees on four flights started to sound less and less appealing. so, yes, a fashion girl did the unthinkable — took her pragmatic sister’s advice and packed two weeks’ worth of clothing and toiletries into a fucking carry on. even now, it gives us the chills to think of it.

if this clothing-hoarding girl can do it, you can certainly do it too with the summer travel tips we’ve chosen to impart here today. here are the essential pieces you’re going to need:

T-SHIRT DRESSES:
2 to 3 of these are key. they’re comfortable and versatile — re-accesorize when you wear them again later in the trip for a totally new look.

BLACK SHORTS:
whatever fabrication you choose, we suggest bringing along a couple pairs of black shorts, rather than a light washed denim. black can be dressed up and down, while denim is — well, just denim. pair with a muscle tee and sneakers for a comfortable day of walking and wear them at night with a dressier shoe.

3 SHOES:
you can get by with three pairs of shoes, if you plan carefully enough — yes, seriously. 1) flat booties: they’re comfortable, keep your feet clean (who knows what the hell is lurking on those often dirty, well-traveled streets), and are a little dressier than a sneaker. 2) fashionable sneaker: listen up, you americans: a comfortable sneaker does not have to be ugly. these are perfect for preventing you from looking like an asshole tourist on days that will involve a lot of walking to see the sights. 3) dressy flats or loafers: perfect for evenings and nice meals out. choose a versatile color or pattern that will allow you to pair them with any outfit.

EASY TANKS:
these are comfortable and breathable, which is crucial when you’re walking around in the sweltering heat. all we can say is that we were thanking the lawd for muscle tanks in 90 degree italian weather.

1 DO-IT-ALL-JACKET:
a faux leather moto jacket can be paired with everything from evening skirts to cocktail dresses to denim shorts, and it looks appropriate with all of them — we don’t understand it, we just embrace it. we suggest a jacket in a cropped cut or a basic black blazer as the one jacket to bring along for your summer travels.

ok, now that you’ve got your key pieces — here’s where the magic comes in. to allow room for pajamas, toiletries, and any other absolute necessities in your carry on, you’re gonna roll these bitches. lay out any lightweight, cotton items, one on top of the other: tanks, dresses, &/or shorts. start from the top and roll them as one down to the bottom. for a better, more visual take on how you go about this, check out purewow’s video on rolling as a luggage space saver.

additionally, if you are traveling for two weeks and upwards, you can really maximize your space by packing a travel-sized laundry detergent. halfway through your trip, wash your worn clothes in your hotel room sink with the detergent, and re-wear: if you are concerned about wearing the same outfit in your photos (not that WE were that vain — but, uh, maybe we were), be sure to re-accessorize. tanks can be worn over dresses, a statement necklace can change the outfit entirely, or swap out your booties for your dressy flats.

now, go have fun and travel lightly! any remaining summer travel packing questions? feel free to leave them in the comments.

this is our jam // sia: 1000 forms of fear

1000 forms of fear, the newest sia album, is so good we’re afraid we were rendered incapable of choosing just one jam to share with you. packed with jams you’re going to think you’re talented enough to belt out alone in the car, it’s next to impossible to choose just one song as a standout — because essentially every song is a standout track. even the cover art of this album is badass.

while sia has been an under-the-radar secret superstar for years now, it seems like this album is destined to remove her “secret” status and propel her toward mainstream success. as an artist who’s well known for her rejection of fame, we’re not sure how much she’s going to like it, but it’s certainly a well f’in deserved achievement.

get started listening and get a head start on what are sure to be sia’s next smash hits.

if someone would have told us in our pre-pregnancy life that a cheap, silly pair of non maternity print pants would be a maternity style staple well into our third trimester, we probably wouldn’t have believed them.

and yet when this baby bump first started revealing itself (right in that “is that a pregnancy bump or did you just eat a lot of tacos last night” phase), these silly pants with the stretchy waistband were there for us. when that bump grew more pronounced, these silly pants calmed our pot-bellied fears. and now, as that baby bump reaches its final stretch (right before the “holy shit is that chick about to give birth” phase), these silly pants are still a go-to for some pregnancy print mixin’ and color blockin’ – proof that you can hang onto some pre-pregnancy stuff and not blow your whole f’in baby budget on maternity clothes.

listen, kids. we know a skinny leg pant is a classic, worthy investment & a key piece of any woman’s wardrobe. the thing is, sometimes they just bore the f’in pants off of us (do you see what we did there? do you get it? do you?). as such, we are tickled pink by the culotte trend, & are quite happy to see it being carried forth in the resort 2015 collections we’ve been ogling over on style.com. we see you, culotte!, we shout from behind our laptop screens. you go, glen coco! culottes are fun, comfortable, confused (is it a skirt or is it a pant or is it both?), & fortunately / unfortunately, it’s most likely that no straight man will ever find them attractive.

i (heather) picked up these more affordable little culottes last summer at zara, & they have been a treasured piece in my wardrobe ever since. in truth, the only reason i don’t wear them more often is that i feel wearing a white garment is just an invitation for some sort of trouble (the words of ray from “girls” ring in my ears: “hannah, you’re wearing a white dress. okay? you’re essentially begging the world to fuck with you. do you understand that? you’re daring a homeless person to wipe their blood on your breasts.”)… but i digress. i’m obsessed with this new pant option & will stop at nothing (NOTHING!) to get more of them into my closet & subsequently onto my person.

this is our jam // white sea - warsaw

we’re currently coveting local LA singer/songwriter white sea’s new album, in cold blood. also known as morgan kibby of M83, white sea is a singer, songwriter, producer, and classically trained pianist who just closed out an f’in killer residency at the bootleg theatre in silver lake. while the entire album is chock full of gorgeously arranged, beautifully and heartbrokenly written, yet danceable jams, we are particularly in love with “warsaw.”

at first it seems strange to hear such a beautiful voice singing dark, i’mma cut you lyrics like “i’ll drink your wine and i’ll slap your wrists / i’ll spin your clocks and i’ll gut your fish / i’ll fuck you blind and make a run for it,” but it’s this kind of dichotomy that makes white sea such an interesting artist. not to mention, you know how much we enjoy a healthy f-bomb or two from an unexpected source.

as an artist’s artist and strong feminine figure, morgan kibby is also unashamed to admit a love for the music of britney spears to refinery 29, and for that, we respect her even more. now, join us in our unabashed fan girldom and get to listenin’.

our very first maternity style post! first and foremost, let’s get down to the nitty gritty – shopping for maternity clothes kinda sucks. finding anything past basic tanks or leggings can be super expensive, not to mention perusing most maternity clothing retailers leaves you feeling as though all pregnant women must want to dress like 50-year-olds. we like to think that over the course of the last several months we’ve gotten this maternity fashion buying thing pretty well conquered, so in the next few style posts we’ll be sharing some tips we’ve picked up along the way.

this dress was one of our first maternity purchases & therefore a bit of a splurge (though it’s now on sale, score for other mama f-bombs!). we edged it up with shit-kickin booties, badass baubles, and a neon accented clutch.

dress: l by jennifer love hewitt for a pea in the pod (now on sale!); booties: jeffrey campbell; clutch: clare vivier; necklace: brandy melville; rings: nasty gal

pregnancy announcement // an f-bomb in the oven

no, your eyes do not deceive you, and no that bulging little bump was not caused by overdoing it on tequila & macarons – WE’RE HAVING A BABY F-BOMB! well, one of us is. the other is just pointing at it.

mama erin & auntie heather are so excited to finally shout the news from these stuccoed LA rooftops, and to deliver you a little dose of maternity fashion combined with our regularly scheduled programming – sprinkled, as always, with a delightful dash of crass. and now for the fun stuff: here’s everything we know so far about this little bundle of cuss-word laced joy

  • IT’S A BOY!
  • he’s scheduled to grace us with his precious little presence on september 30, 2014
  • his name is smith (no, goddammit, not like the character on sex and the city. well…yes. kind of. it is a little bit like that.)
  • months before his baby shower, he is already the proud owner of 20 onesies, one baby leather jacket, 9 pairs of pants, 8 pairs of shoes, and 3 awesome beanies…so get ready for some pretty intense baby style around these parts
  • at 27 weeks along, this lil guy is just about to enter the third trimester
  • most missed foods include real coffee, blue cheese, sashimi, runny eggs…and dat tequila
  • pregnancy symptoms have been kind to us thus far – no morning sickness, just some minor aches & pains that prenatal yoga & running have been helping with

baby is doing great, kicking up a storm, and getting chubbier by the day until it’s time for his f’in debut.

bleachers - rollercoaster

we have something to share and we’d like you to listen closely, because this shit right here just doesn’t come around very often. we can tell you, without a shadow of a doubt, that after listening to this week’s edition of this is our jam, you, fair reader, will have your summer 2014 anthem on lock. yeah, you heard us right. this song is so good that we are making statements this bold.

from the very first time we heard “i wanna get better” by bleachers, we were excited about this band. a side project begun by jack antonoff of fun., this is very un-fun.-like music, or, as TIME put it: “more fun than fun.” but the newest single from bleachers, “rollercoaster,” is what really sold us: this song is a soaring, summer-y jammy jam that will make you want to run down the beach, arms waving triumphantly above you in the air, splashing water at passersby and making out with your summer lover in the salty ocean water. this may sound like an oddly specific emotional sequence, but trust us, you will experience all of these things and more upon first listen.

do yourself a favor and click on the link below to begin your summer love affair with bleachers (who we can’t wait to see at outside lands in august).

allsaints is like your friend’s bad ass, muscle car-driving, chain-smoking older sister you idolize as a child. it’s cool and confident while also being just out of reach. entering one of their stores is always a danger: while the prices might make it a bit of a splurge, the quality and effortlessly cool cut and draping of the garments justify them in return.

i (heather) couldn’t resist picking up this black silk button-up dress on a trip to allsaints in malibu. it’s a classic dress that can easily take from me from work to cocktails, all while imparting a subtle message of “i’m not afraid to cut a bitch.” as such, i cannot wear it without friends whispering “you are the next supreme” (if you haven’t watched american horror story: the coven, please do), which might bother some, but frankly pleases me to no end. i pair it with my witchiest alexander wang booties to live up to the character: guess i know what i’m going to be for halloween.

dress: allsaints; necklace: zara; sunglasses: forever 21; shoes: alexander wang.
