formerly of band kid british, manchester, england-based simeon mclean recently launched a solo project called august + us. a little bit soul & a little bit pop, the adorable DIY video that was released to coincide with single “fun” is… well… just plain f’in fun, too. we can’t wait to see what comes from august + us next.
let us be the first to admit, we started off as skeptics when this whole “rub oil on your face; it’s good for your skin” thing became a beauty trend. having been cursed with extremely oily and acne prone skin, we have always been the types more drawn to products that promise to dry up blemishes and eliminate shine. it took us about 6 articles touting the benefits of rose hip seed oil, this huffington post write-up, and finally the urgings of both our mother and miranda kerr before we finally decided to give this $7 wonder a try.
well guys, we’ve given it a shot. and we’re beliebers. we first started testing this product on small, inconspicuous patches of our jawline each night to make sure it wouldn’t cause our skin to go ape shit. after a week of that with no issues, we decided to go for the full rub down – still taking care to avoid any broken out areas. because rubbing oil on top of acne has to be a bad idea, right? well we got even ballsier a few nights after that and started smearing it right on top of our break out areas, and an incredible thing happened – it actually IMPROVED our blemishes by morning.
we highly recommend going to get you some of this miracle product – it’s a natural acne & eczyma treatment, it moisturizes like crazy, and it has tons of antioxidants and vitamins that repair skin cells while you sleep (it’s also a great follow-up moisturizer to one of our other favorite skincare steals, the aztec clay mask).
oh, oscars night — the lights, the glamour, the selfies, growing ever more obsessed with lupita, wondering HOW we can book jared leto’s colorist for ourselves.
while we know the oscars are all about the movies, frankly one of our favorite parts is seeing what the hell everyone wore to hollywood’s most fashionable night. while there weren’t exactly any risk-takers last night (with the exception of pharrell, the love of our lives), we still saw a lot of red carpet badassery. below are our top 10 oscar looks.
urban outfitters found a new way to get us, guys! their new line of outdoorsy chic workout gear, without walls, debuts tomorrow online and in stores in hollywood, new york, costa mesa, santa monica and san francisco – so it was oh-so-timely to share it with you today in our first edition of fit bitch fridays. the line of fitness clothes and accessories is geared toward outdoor activities, though if you live in LA and pick yourself up a few pieces this weekend, we’re betting you’ll be rockin those bad boys inside on a treadmill as the city makes up for its so-far rainless winter in a 3-day long downpour. preview the full lookbook here or check out some of our favorite pieces below.
lately we’ve been noticing that lots of our blog feeds, parts of our houses, and at least half of our pinterest boards are filled with disco ball motifs. they just add a little bit of over-the-top, just-on-the-edge-of-tacky, retro-fun glamour to any space they’re in. so in the spirit of fancying up our coffee table (and saving a little bit of money), today we’re going to show you how we created this damn adorable faux-mirrored planter simply by hacking up some CDs we had laying around the house….because why were we saving those CDs anyway?
- get yourself a cheap, ugly terra cotta pot. because terra cotta orange is less than cute peeking through cracks between irridescent “tiles”, go ahead and spray paint that bitch white.
- take your old CD collection and start cutting it up with scissors (we used about 5-6 to cover our medium-sized pot). try to get your tiles as square-shaped as possible, but don’t feel like you have to be totally precise. part of the charm of this look is that it’s not perfectly symmetrical.
- grab your hot glue gun and start sticking your tiles onto the pot in vertical rows until you’ve made it all the way around the pot.
“take me to church” by ireland-bred singer hozier: soulful, powerful, raw, and just goddamned sexy. we’ve been non-stop belting this number, much to the chagrin of our neighbors. check out his ep by the same title at once and, if you’re a fellow angeleno, see him on his first US tour at school night! at bardot on march 17th or hotel cafe on march 19th.
call us crazy but we think irish car bombs are just about the most delicious shot you can throw back. we can be found ordering them on too-drunk nights in seedy bars year round, but the great thing about the month of march is that we can do it under the guise of st. patrick’s day holiday spirit. we’ve searched high and low for a recipe that combines all 3 delicious boozey components (guinness, jameson and bailey’s) into an adorable baked confection and finally wound up combining a few to achieve the perfect one we are sharing below. right out of the oven you will swear you just baked an irish car bomb shot right into a cupcakes (cuz…you did), and by the next day the flavors will have settled together to simply taste like the BEST goddamn chocolate cupcakes you’ve ever tasted. we’re spiking all the chocolate with beer from here on out – bottoms up!
GUINNESS CHOCOLATE CUPCAKES:
- 1 cup stout beer
- 2 sticks butter
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 flour
- 2 cups sugar
- 1½ teaspoons baking soda
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- ⅔ cup sour cream
preheat oven to 350°. line 24 cupcake cups with liners. bring 1 cup stour and 1 cup butter to simmer in large saucepan over medium heat. add cocoa powder and whisk until mixture is smooth. cool for 5 minutes. whisk flour, baking soda, and salt in large bowl to blend. using mixer, beat eggs and sour cream in another large bowl until blended. add stout-chocolate mixture to egg mixture and beat til just combined. add flour mixture and beat briefly on slow. using rubber spatula, fold batter until completely combined. divide batter among cupcake liners, filling them to ⅔ of the way. bake about 17 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. cool completely on rack.
JAMESON GANACHE FILLING:
- 8 onces bittersweet baking chocolate
- ⅔ cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons butter, room temperature
- 1-2 teaspoons irish whiskey such as jameson
chop the chocolate and transfer to a heatproof bowl. heat the cream until simmering and pour it over the chocolate. let sit for one minute and then stir until smooth (if this hasn’t melted the chocolate enough, you can microwave it for 20 seconds at a time). add the butter and whiskey and stir until combined.
FILL THE CUPCAKES:
let the ganache cool until thick but still soft enough to be piped. using a cupcake corer, 1-inch round cookie cutter, or just a small knife, cut the centers out of your cooled cupcakes (being careful not to go all the way to the bottom). pipe the ganache into the holes til it’s level with the top of the cupcake.
BAILEY’S IRISH CREAM FROSTING:
- 3-4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 stick butter, room temperature
- 3-4 tablespoons liqueur such as bailey’s
whip the butter in the bowl of an electric mixer for several minutes til light and fluffy. slowly alternate beating in the powdered sugar and bailey’s in small amounts until frosting is the right consistency. pipe onto filled cupcakes.
